Man jailed for 10 yrs for carrying gold bars
A Chittagong court today sentenced a man to 10 years’ imprisonment for smuggling in 20 gold bars from abroad.
Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahenur also fined the convict, Salim Uddin, Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer three more months in jail.
The court declared the verdict in presence of Salim at the courtroom, reports our correspondent quoting Fakhruddin Chowdhury, state-prosecutor in the case.
Salim Uddin was arrested along with the gold bars, weighing 2.8 kilogramme, at Shah Amanat International Airport in the port city on January 24, 2014.
He was held by Custom’s Intelligence officials after he had landed from a plane from Dubai, the official added.
Custom’s intelligence officer B M Abdullah-Al-Masum filed the case against Salim. On completion of the investigation, police submitted the charge sheet against him the same year.
