Man dies during cops' raid in Rangpur
A Saudi Arabia expatriate died when police went to his house in Rangpur city early today to detain him as a suspect in a theft case.
Police said Nurunnabi Hossain, 32, son of Abdur Rashid, died of heart attack while family claimed that he was killed after being tortured by police, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.
Victim’s brother Golzar Hossain said a team of plainclothes police led by Rangpur Sadar Police Station’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Tariqul Islam conducted a drive at their house in Sathmatha Balakari area around 3:00AM.
Though he was not an accused in the case, police beat Nurunnabi up and tried to take him with them, said victim’s wife Arzina Begum.
“At one stage, he became senseless and fell on the ground and died on the way to a local hospital,” she added.
Police team reportedly took the body to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, locals confined the cops in a room for two hours following the incident.
Later, senior police officials rescued them with a promise that the cops would be punished if they are found guilty.
The wife demanded a probe into the incident and exemplary punishment of the “responsible” police officials.
Toffazzal Hossain, the eldest brother of the deceased, brought an allegation of demanding Tk 80,000 bribe by cops and threatened to harass the victim with false charges.
ABM Zahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Sadar Police Station, said police raided the house on specific information. Nurunnabi died of cardiac arrest after police reached there.
However, the OC denied the allegation of demanding bribe.
