Land disputes leave one dead, 60 injured
A man was killed and at least 60 others were injured in clashes over land disputes in Dinajpur and Habiganj districts yesterday and the day before.
Our Dinajpur correspondent reported that an elderly man died and eight others sustained injuries during a clash between two groups of people at Dalalipara village in Parbatipur upazila yesterday.
The dead is Md Nazrul Islam, 60, of the village.
Police quoted locals as saying that there had been a longstanding dispute between Nazrul Islam and Abul Haque over the ownership of 1.92 acres of land at the village.
Abul Haque and his men went to the land around 10:00pm to plant trees. Hearing the news, Nazrul Islam and his supporters rushed to the spot and locked in an altercation with Haque and his men.
At one stage, the two groups swooped on each other, leaving Nazrul dead on the spot and at least eight people from both sides injured.
Being informed, police went to the spot and dispersed the clashing groups.
The injured were admitted to Parbatipur Upazila Health Complex.
No case was filed with the police station concerned as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday.
Our Moulvibazar correspondent adds: At least 52 people were injured in a clash between two groups of people -- one led by Ali Asgar and the other by Phul Miah--at Bamkandi village under Sadar upazila of Habiganj district over leasing a land on Sunday.
Police said a group of 20 to 25 people led by Phul Miah attacked Ali Asgar and his family members in the afternoon. Hearing the news, relatives and the supporters of Asgar rushed in and locked in a clash with Phul Mia and his men.
At least 52 people from both sides were injured in the clash that continued for half an hour.
Police said Phul Miah and and his neighbour Ali Asgar clashed over leasing a piece of land near their houses.
The seriously injured were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while the rest were given first aid.
