Labour unrest: Claims of harassment to NHRC
Labour leaders today handed a memorandum to the national rights boss alleging harassment by the law enforcement agencies following the labour unrest in Ashulia.
Bearing the banner of Garment Workers’ Rights Movement, a group of 12 pro-labour rights bodies, leaders handed the memo to Kazi Reazul Haque at his office.
“It is a legitimate right to demand wage hike. But cases against them under special and criminal laws is irrational and violation of human rights,” alleged Mushrefa Mishu, president of Garment Workers’ Unity Forum.
National Human Rights Commission Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque accepted the memorandum and assured the leaders that talks will be held in this regard with all relevant stakeholders.
During about two-weeks of labour unrest in the industrial belt of Ashulia, owners were compelled to shut down 59 apparel factories due to relentless strike for demand of Tk 15,000 minimum wage.
Lawsuits were filed against about 1,800 apparel workers over the unrest and at least 1,600 were sacked from their workplaces. Following these moves, the apparel factories reopened.
