The government has suspended Shahzadpur municipality mayor Halimul Haque Miru as a Sirajganj court accepted charges against him in journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul murder case.

The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) took the decision on Monday, our Pabna correspondent reports.

Miru, the prime accused in the case, is now in jail in connection with the case.

“The LGRD ministry has suspended Miru from his mayoral post under the section 31 (01) of the Local Government (municipality) Act 2009,” said Abu Nur Mohammad Samsuzzaman, deputy director of local government division.

The suspension order reached Sirajganj district administration on Monday.

Md Abdur Razzak, councillor of ward no. 7 in Shahzadpur municipality, has been suspended as he was also accused in the charge sheet.

Police on May 2, 2017 pressed charges against Miru and 37 others in the case.

Shimul, a local correspondent of Bangla daily Samakal, was shot by Miru during a factional clash of ruling Awami League in the upazila on February 2. He succumbed to his injuries on way to Dhaka a day into the clash.
