Italy, Japan move to aid their citizens after Dhaka hostage crisis
Italy and Japan governments are gearing up their efforts to provide support to their citizens in Bangladesh after the killing of 20 people including foreign nationals at Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka Friday night.
As part of an initiative to provide support to the family members of the Italian victims, five government officials arrived in Dhaka by a special flight this morning, an official dealing with foreigners at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport told The Daily Star.
They are even planning to take back the affected nationals back to their countries if needed, an official said.
Meanwhile, a team of government officials from Japan is scheduled to arrive around 10:00pm today, the official said.
Nine Italian and seven Japanese nationals were among 20 victims who were brutally murdered by a group of militants at popular hangout Holey Artisan after they were held as hostages by the attackers on Friday.
Thirteen hostages including one Japanese and two Sri Lankans were rescued while six of the gunmen, who attacked the upscale eatery on Road 79 Friday night, were killed in the 50-minute army-led joint forces operation codenamed ‘Operation Thunderbolt’.
The delegates from the two counties will meet with the family members of the victims, hold talks with Bangladesh government officials and observe the prevailing situation, the airport official said.
