Interns maul patient’s son at Bogra Zia hospital
Intern doctors at Bogra’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital today attacked the relative of a patient following an altercation over a trifling matter.
After the mass beating inside the office of the hospital’s director and in his presence, the interns have gone on a strike, reports our Bogra correspondent.
The Daily Star has obtained a video of the incident where the patient’s son is seen being beaten up by about four interns in presence of the army dress-clad director.
The patient was Alauddin Sarkar, 65, of Konagati area of Sirajganj Sadar. He was undergoing treatment at the hospital for the last few days, said Bina and Shetu, the patient’s daughters.
They wanted to turn off the fan and asked an intern about it, the duo told The Daily Star. “Our brother Rouf Sarkar, 35, thought she was a nurse and addressed her as such.”
After the addressing as ‘Sister’ and a bout of heated conversations, other intern doctors beat up Rouf and made him squat holding his ears, Bina alleged.
“Then again, when we said we will complain about this, they swooped on him (Rouf) and beat him inside the director’s office in his presence,” Bina said.
Silimpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Shah Alam said police rescued the victim and brought the situation under control.
Director of the hospital, AKM Masud Ahsan, who refuted allegations of the incident taking place inside his office, told The Daily Star that “it was a clash of interns with patients over a silly matter, which was resolved soon”.
An intern Kutub Uddin told The Daily Star that “the patient misbehaved with an intern”. He said the interns declared a work-abstention on seven-point charter including demand for safety of the intern doctors.
The emergency section of the hospital is currently out of purview of the strike.
