HRW urges stop to execution of 3 Huji militants
Bangladesh should immediately halt the imminent execution of three men convicted of a May 2004 grenade attack, which targeted the then British envoy Anwar Choudhury, Human Rights Watch has said.
“Criminals need to be punished, but Bangladesh is moving in the wrong direction by invoking the death penalty,” Brad Adams, Asia director for HRW, said in a statement issued in this regard.
“Bangladesh should instead initiate an immediate moratorium on capital punishment because it is inherently cruel and irreversible, and should never be used, regardless of the crime,” he said.
The Supreme Court yesterday released its full verdict that upheld its order confirming the death penalties of three Huji militants, including its chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, for the 2004 grenade attack on then UK high commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Chowdhury.
The release of the apex court verdict that dismissed the review petitions of the three death-row convicts has cleared the way for the jail authorities to start the process for executing them.
They can avail presidential clemency as a last resort.
