HC allows Shawkat Mahmud to go abroad
The High Court today asked the government to allow BNP chairperson's adviser Shawkat Mahmud to go abroad for treatment for 40 days.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hassan passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Shawkat, president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), seeking permission for going abroad.
Shawkat’s lawyer M Masud Rana told The Daily Star that the HC has earlier asked his client to take permission from a proper court before going abroad on any purpose.
A Dhaka court on July 17 rejected an application filed by Shawkat seeking permission for going abroad as he did not specifically mention why he would go abroad.
Then, he filed a petition with the HC seeking its permission saying that he would go abroad for treatment as he has been suffering from various disease including diabetes, high blood pressure and back pain.
Mahmud secured bail from lower courts in around 30 cases filed against him for vandalism and arson during the anti-government movement last year.
He got release from jail on June 22.
