Govt orders special security at power stations
The government has ordered all power producers, suppliers, transmitters and distributors to beef up security at the power plants across the country in the wake of Dhaka and Sholakia terrorist attacks, officials said today.
The instruction came after a meeting of all companies involved with electricity generation, supply, transmission and distribution at the energy, power and mineral resources ministry in the secretariat, with its State Minister Nasrul Hamid in the chair.
“The meeting assessed the existing security situation at the power plants and substations, and instructions were given to strengthen security," Mohammad Hossain, director general of Power Cell, told The Daily Star.
Power stations and substations across the country have already been kept under stringent security. It has been strengthened further following the Dhaka café attacks on July 1 and Sholakia attack on Eid day.
Senior officials of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), Dhaka Power Distribution Company, Dhaka Electric Supply Company Ltd, Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board and Power Grid Company of Bangladesh attended the meeting.
Saiful Islam Chowdhury, spokesperson of the BPDB, said security has been beefed up in and around all power plants and substations of the state-run company soon after the Gulshan attack.
Additional monitoring has already been put in place, he said.
