Govt created mass awareness against terrorism: PM
Renewing her firm resolve to free Bangladesh from terrorism and militancy, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said her government has been able to create mass awareness against the twin devils.
"Through this we have set an example in the world and we have firm belief that we will be able to free Bangladesh from militancy and terrorism together Insha Allah," she said.
The premier also warned that legal action would be taken against those patronizing terrorism and militancy. "We must take legal action against those who are nurturing the twin demons," she said.
Hasina said this while replying to a supplementary raised by treasury bench member Dr Dipu Moni during her question answer hour in the House.
The Leader of the House said it is a matter of hope that all professional bodies have been playing an anti-militancy role from their respective positions.
The Prime Minister said the people of the country are pious not fanatics. "The peaceful coexistence the people of different faiths is a rare example, and terrorism and militancy would never be established in the country," she said.
Referring to her videoconferencing with the cross section of people in 64 districts under 8 divisions, the premier said the government has got an unprecedented response to its initiatives to create awareness against militancy and terrorism.
She said the people of the country are now united against terrorism and militancy. "A unity has been created among all countrymen, and parents, guardians and teachers are now very conscious so that their children and students don't step into a wrong path," she said.
Pointing to the remarks of the BNP leaders after the recent terrorist attacks in Gulshan, Sholakia and Kalyanpur, the premier said it seems from their comments that they have put forward a condition that the government will have to do it otherwise terrorism and militancy won't be stopped in the country.
"It seems from their words that they would stop terrorism and militancy if their condition is met, which is very regretful," she said, urging the people to remain alert against it.
Mentioning the Kalyanpur operation, the premier said the police and other law enforcement agencies have been able to contain the militants very courageously.
"It's a blessing of Allah that the country was saved from another dreadful attack," she said.
Earlier, in reply to a starred question from Workers Party lawmaker Mir Mostak Ahmed Robi (Satkhira-2), the leader of the House said the conspiracies of Jamaat-e-Islami, the defeated forces of 1971, are yet to be stopped.
"Centering the 10th Jatiya Sangsad polls and completion of its one year anniversary, the BNP-Jamaat nexus perpetrated heinous rampage in the name of the anti-government movement and at that time children were not spared," she said.
The premier said during the rule of the BNP-led four-party alliance government, the Jamaat got a scope for organizing the party, and dominated some print and electronic media.
As a result, she said, it is seen that some print and electronic media are engaged in anti-government activities whenever they get opportunity.
Sheikh Hasina said the emergence of militancy was an outcome of patronisation of the BNP-Jamaat government during their five-year misrule. They made ill-efforts to turn Bangladesh as a militant and ineffective state on the world stage, she said.
Awami League-led grand alliance formed the government in 2009 after it secured a landslide victory in the 9th parliamentary elections and took firm steps against militancy and terrorism, she mentioned.
As a result, she said, Bangladesh was recognized as a role model in the world with the support of the pious and peace-loving people. But the conspirators did not stop their evil design.
"As the BNP-Jamaat were not successful against the government by enforcing hartal and blockades, they chose the path of targeted killings of foreigners to embarrass the government," she said.
