Girls in remote village vow to prevent early marriage
Over 150 girl students of Bishkol Government Primary School and Bishkol High School at remote Bishkol village in Ashtomonisha union in Bhangura upazila under the district pledged to prevent early marriage at a programme on Tuesday.
“The girls vowed to prevent early marriage in their life and also conduct campaign to prevent it in the area,” said Abdul Mannan, headmaster of Bishkol Government Primary School, who conducted the oath taking at the school.
Social group 'Palli Somaj' run by non-governmental organisation Brac arranged the programme along with a discussion to create awareness against the bad effects of early marriage in the society.
“This is one of the remotest and most poverty-stricken areas of the district. Here people are hardly aware of the importance of girls' education. Many parents rush for their daughters' marriage when they reach 12 years, causing their drop-out from school,” said Goutam Chandra, field officer of Brac.
In remote villages like Bishkol, early marriage still continues as a usual practice, and most of the schoolgirls are married off due to lack of awareness, speakers said at the programme.
The parents should be made aware to prevent early marriage so that the girls' bright future is not destroyed, they said.
Among others, teacher of Bishkol High School Md Momtaz Uddin, madrasa teacher Moulana Abdul Kaiyum, and local UP member Osman Gani spoke at the programme with president of 'Palli Somaj' Razia Sultana in the chair.
