Females migrating towards cities more than males: Study
Large cities of Bangladesh now experience more female migration than those of the male, according to a new study by the UN Population Fund.
In the age group of 10 to 29 years, for every 100 male migrants, there are 167 women migrants in Dhaka while 166 female migrants in Chittagong, says the study released at the auditorium of Planning Commission in the city today.
“Historically, migration flows to the megacities were male-dominated, but females are now in the majority,” said Professor Gavin Jones, a researcher of the study Urbanisation and Migration in Bangladesh.
The job opportunities that have opened for young women in the readymade garment industry are probably a large part of the explanation, he said.
