Eight to die, 11 get life for murder
A Habiganj court has sentenced eight people to death and eleven others to life imprisonment in a case filed for killing a neighbour over a land dispute on January 7 in 2011.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Mafruza Pervin pronounced the verdict yesterday afternoon.
The eight death sentence awardees are Ershad Ali, Abdul Malek, Musharaf, Abdul Kalam, Ataur Rahman, Abul Kashem, Sudhangsu Sen, and Suvash Sen in Gangail village in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj.
The convicts who got life term are Hormuz Ali, Mostaq Ahmed, Janu Mia, Shanu Mia, Javed Mia, Zaheer Mia, Bakul Mia, Amir Ali, Dulal Mia, Sayed Mia and Kamal Mia in Gangail village in Madhabpur upazila.
The court acquitted three others in the case as the prosecution failed to produce enough evidence against them.
According to the prosecution, rival men hacked to death Dewan Mohsin Tipu, son of Mohsin Master, after breaking into his house over a land related dispute at Gangail village in Madhabpur upazila on January 7 in 2011.
The victim's wife Hasina Akther Baby filed a case accusing Ershad Ali and his gang and unnamed others with Madhabpur Police Station on January 9 in 2011.
On November 3 in 2013, CID Inspector Kamruzzaman, investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge-sheet accusing 22 people, said Public Prosecutor advocate Lutfur Rahman.
After examining the records and deposition of the witnesses, the judge handed down the verdict, he added.
