Dyke collapse floods 20 Sherpur villages
At least 20 villages in Nalitabari upazila of the district were flooded as 200 metres of a flood control embankment on the Bhogai River collapsed yesterday morning due to heavy rain and onrush of water from the upstream for the last few days.
Several thousand people of the affected villages, including Nalitabari, Marichpuran, Jogania, Khalbhanga, Nalkura, Kharkhariakanda, Gojakura, Banshkanda, Kayarpar and Kapashia, have been marooned.
Besides, the roads and seedbeds of the areas went under water and fishes of around 50 ponds were washed away by the floodwater.
Abdul Hakim of Khalbhanga village urged the government to take immediate steps for repairing the embankment.
Ashrafuzzaman, chairman of Nalitabari Union Parishad, said as
Khalbhanga is the most dangerous point of the embankment, the authorities concerned should take immediate steps to repair it.
Mokhlesur Rahman, a gauge reader of Water Development Board, said a portion of the embankment collapsed as the river has been flowing 58 centimetres above the danger level since Wednesday night.
Apart from this, seven unions of Jhenaigati upazila were inundated due to rise of water level in Moharashi, Someshwari, Jhenai and Kalaghusha rivers.
