Downpour disrupts normal life of Mymensingh townspeople
A three-hour downpour disrupted normal life in the district town yesterday.
Train service on Mymensingh-Jamalpur route was disrupted for about three hours as rail tracks went under water.
Due to the rainfall, a big tree was uprooted in Kanchijuly area of the town, disrupting road communication between Mymensingh and Tangail for about four hours, said Md Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
The authorities of at least 15 schools suspended their examinations in the town as classrooms were inundated following the heavy rain, said locals.
Around 84 millimetres rain was recorded in Mymensingh in three hours till noon, according to Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Intercity Teesta Express left for Jamalpur at 1:20pm after a three-hour halt at Mymensingh station as rail lines in the area were inundated by the rain water, said stationmaster Abu Taher.
“We have suspended all sorts of examinations as rainwater entered the school,” said Md Yunus Faruque, headmaster of Mymensingh Government High School, adding that many students have failed to reach the schools as the rain inundated their houses.
Half yearly and pretest examinations were scheduled to be held in two shifts yesterday but the authorities were forced to suspend the examinations due to the heavy rain.
