Diseases, erosion cause new menace
With recession of floodwater in different districts, people in the affected areas are now worried due to spread of diseases and threat of erosion.
Communication problems due to broken roads add to the situation.
Skin, respiratory and eye diseases have affected many people in Fulchhari upazila under Gaibandha district, reports our Gaibandha correspondent.
Visiting Hatathpara village in Udakhali union yesterday, this correspondent found that most of the people have been attacked with skin diseases while children and elderly people are suffering from respiratory problems.
Sores developed in hands and legs as people have to move through mud in the area.
The victims also suffer from itches due to contact with contaminated flood water.
"I cannot even walk properly due to acute pain in sore toes. All the members of my family are also suffering from the same problem. The children cry in pain, especially during night," said Shahera Begun, a housewife.
"We cannot go to doctor for treatment, as two bridges on Udakhali-Singria road collapsed due to surging water. Health workers cannot reach here due to the communication problem," said Golejan Bibi, another villager.
The people who had earlier taken shelter on flood control embankments have started retuning home as floodwater started receding.
Now they need financial help for repairing or rebuilding of the dwelling houses that were badly damaged by floodwater.
"All the hedges of my two houses were washed away by the surging water and now I have no money to rebuild my damaged house," said Akkas Ali, a small farmer.
Our Bogra correspondent reports: The Jamuna and Bangalee rivers in the district are now flowing below the danger marks, but at least 15 roads under Pakullah and Tekanichukainagar unions in Sonatola upazila are still under water, much to the sufferings of the 25 thousand people of the 32 villages, upazila administration and local sources said.
Tekanichukainagar Kachari Bazar to Dakhil Madrasa road, Purba Tekanichukainagar to Moheshpara road, Moheshpara to Bhiknerpara road, Baliadanga-Mohobbaterpara road, Dauderpara-Jontiarpara road, Jontiarpara-Mohabbaterpara road, Purba Tekani-PMD Dakhil Madrasa road, and Shorolia primary school to Mushorpara road are in worst conditions in Tekanichukainagar union under the upazila.
In Pakullah union, Achorerpara to Purba Shujaitpur road, Amtoli-Jamuna road, Shujaitpur to Baluapara primary school road, Pakullah Uttorpara to Radhakantopur road, Chalalkandi primary school to Guchchhagram road are badly affected, said locals.
The major roads of the Jamuna basin areas in the two unions and their surrounding areas were badly damaged by the flood and 75% people, who depend on agriculture, are fully affected by the flood, said Ziaur Rahman, project implementation officer of Sonatola upazila.
They area facing problem to carry their agricultural produces to markets, he said.
Our Munshiganj correspondent adds: With recession of the water level in the Padma River, overall flood situation in the district has improved a lot and ferry service on Shimulia-Kawrakandi route are returning to normalcy.
However, like in other years during this time, erosion has started in different areas, much to the worry of locals.
