Delayed trial turns 'patience test' for justice seekers
A staggering 66,049 cases are waiting for trial in different courts of the district, causing immense sufferings for the justice seekers.
The perennial problem persists as the number of courts and judges is too inadequate to deal with the situation, said stakeholders.
Five key posts of judges, including the positions of district and sessions judge, joint district judge and three assistant judges are vacant, said a source in the Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge's office.
Of the 66,049 civil and criminal cases that are pending, 3187 cases are under trial in the District and Sessions Judge's Court, 6359 cases in Women and Children Repression Prevention Special Tribunal, and 26,175 cases in the courts of chief judicial magistrate, additional chief judicial magistrate and judicial magistrates, said official sources of the District and Sessions Judge's Court.
The rest 29,528 cases are in the courts of additional district and sessions judge, joint district and sessions judge, senior assistant judges and assistant judges.
Amid the situation, justice seekers are suffering much.
Cox's Bazar District Lawyer's Association has pleaded to the Ministry of Law several times to fill up the posts of district and sessions judge and other vacant posts of judges, said AZM Moinuddin, general secretary of the association.
Law ministry sources said about 27 lakh cases are pending and 400 posts of judges are vacant in the lower courts of the country.
The government recently gave appointment to 53 judges and recruitment of another 215 judges for the lower courts are on the way, informed law ministry sources.
