Declared dead, newborn found alive before burial in Faridpur
A newborn baby, declared dead by a doctor, was found alive just before it was being buried at a graveyard in Faridpur early today.
Rejia Alom, a doctor of Dr Jahid Memorial Child Hospital in Faridpur town, declared the baby girl dead after its birth last night, Abul Kalam Mia, the grandfather of the baby, told our Faridpur correspondent.
The baby cried out when he with the help of a local priest was about to bury it at Faridpur Municipality Graveyard, the grandfather said.
Earlier, Abul Kalam kept the baby into a carton after the doctor said that she is dead.
Later, he took the carton to the graveyard for burial at 3:00am but the staff of the graveyard, Md Hiro, told him to wait until morning. So, he put the carton beside a concrete grave and waited.
“We found the baby alive and was crying when we opened the carton,” the grandfather said.
Earlier, he took his daughter-in-law Najnin Akter to the hospital last night when she felt labour pain, he said.
Najnin delivered the baby without the presence of any doctor at a doctor’s room as there were no more beds for new patients at the hospital, said Mia, who works as a clerk at Faridpur Anser Camp.
Doctor Rejia, in her reaction, said the baby was prematurely delivered in its six months and she did not found its pulse in her examination.
“It is a miracle that the baby is alive now. Only Allah knows it,” Doctor Rejia added.
An investigation committee was formed in this regard and steps will be taken according to the report, said ASA Md Jahangir Chowdhury, general secretary of management committee of the hospital.
The father of the baby, Najmul Huda, lives in Dhaka with his wife Najnin.
Earlier, doctors in Dhaka informed Najnin that she would give birth to her baby on January 9 of next year.
