Cold, fog make life difficult
The ongoing bone-chilling cold coupled with icy winds and fog hits farmers hard in the district as they cannot work at their farmlands.
Due to the situation, their Boro seedlings are not growing properly, said the farmers.
If the situation continues for three to four days more, Boro seedlings will be destroyed, they said.
Bidhubhushon Roy, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension in Lalmonirhat, said they are very worried over the continuous biting cold as heavy fog is very much harmful to Boro seedlings.
They suggested farmers to cover the seedlings with polythene sheets during the night and dawn, he said.
Elderly grower Trilakkhonath Barman, 63, of Kodalkhata village in Sadar upazila said it is too hard to work at crop field during the bone-chilling cold.
“I asked my two sons to go to the land but they did not dare to go there due to the biting cold. I also failed to find farm labourers due to the unfavourable weather,” he said.
“Due to heavy cold and fog, we cannot work at our crop fields but it is essential to save our planted Boro seedlings,” said another farmer Nabir Hossain, 65, of the village.
Widow Hazera Bewa, 68, who lives on the dyke of Water Development Board at Bumka village in Sadar upazila, said she along with others on the dyke has been facing immense sufferings due to lack of warm clothes but they are yet to get any assistance from the government or NGOs or any kind hearted people.
“Due to the cold and fog, we day labourers are the worst sufferers,” she said, adding she is fighting against the most severe cold wave in her life.
Rajarhat meteorological office sources said the lowest temperature was recorded at 5.8 degrees Celsius yesterday morning, while it was 3.1 on Monday in Lalmonirhat and Kurigram.
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jayosree Rani Roy said warm clothes, especially blankets, were distributed among cold-hit ultra poor people but it was insufficient.
They have already sent a letter to the deputy commissioner seeking more warm clothes, she said.
