Classes hampered as 35 institutions damaged
The nor'wester that lashed several upazilas of the district Saturday night caused serious damage to educational institutions, dwelling houses, croplands and broiler farms.
Three people were killed and 15 others injured due to tree collapse and lightning during the storm.
Tin-roofs of 23 educational institutions in Trishal upazila were blown away, affecting academic activities, said Mahbub Hasan Shahin, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Trishal.
"We have prepared a list for sending to the district administration for immediate funding to repair the institutions. We have also urged the local elite to come forward with helping hand for the purpose," he said.
In Muktagachha, the storm badly damaged 12 educational institutions, causing suspension of classes there, said UNO Umme Afsari Johra.
"We are making a list of the affected institutions to send to the deputy commissioner of Mymensingh for immediate allocation," she said.
Osmania High School and Chakrampur Fazil Madrasa in Trishal, Bonbangla F Rahman High School, Bhitibari Alim Senior Madrasa, Garbazail High School, Polsa Adarsha High School, Baniabari High School and Mogoltola High School in Muktagachha, and Gopalnagar Emdadia Senior Fazil Madrasa in Sadar upazila are some of the badly affected institutions.
Boro and vegetables on around 5500 hectares of land belonging to over 10,000 farmers in the district were affected in Saturday's storm, said Bibhuti Bhushan Sarker, district training officer of the Department of Agriculture Extension, Mymensingh.
Of it, crops on 777 hectares were totally destroyed.
Daugaon, Kashimpur, Kheruajani and Banshati unions in Muktagachha, Radhakanai union in Phulbaria, Baroihati, Dutter Bazar and Niguari in Gafargaon, and Rampur and Balipara unions in Trishal upazila are the worst affected areas, said the official.
