Class under open sky
Students of Delduar Sadar Model Government Primary School in Tangail are attending their classes under the open sky since a nor'wester destroyed a portion of the institution more than three weeks ago.
Out of the seven classrooms, one has been badly damaged by the storm, hampering education of around 770 students, who were already facing trouble for the lack of sufficient classrooms for years.
Several guardians alleged that a number of students of the institution have fallen sick as they had to attend their classes under scorching sun due to the crisis of classrooms.
A number of teachers of the institution said the school had only seven classrooms, which were not sufficient to accommodate its 770 students, adding that the recent damage to one of the classrooms has turned the problem more acute.
The school is one of the top institutions in the upazila and it has achieved 100 percent pass record in this year's Primary Terminal Examinations, they said.
Headmaster of the school Abdul Halim said although Delduar upazila chairman built a tin-fenced structure in the school premises two years ago, it is lying unused as other necessary works are not done yet.
“We have informed the upazila administration and appealed to them to build a new schoolhouse”, he said.
“I along with the upazila nirbahi officer visited the damaged schoolhouse and also raised the issue at the monthly meeting of the upazila parishad”, said Delduar Upazila Primary Education Officer Kazi Saiful.
A tin-shed classroom of the school got badly damaged after a tree of adjacent Delduar Zamindar House collapsed on it during a storm on April 30.
