Class in risky building
Students are attending classes in the risky building of Achhiya Khatun Government Primary School in Magura municipality.
This institution was established in 1974 on 19.75 decimals of land by the side of the Magura-Jessore highway.
On a visit to the school recently, this correspondent found that there are four classrooms and an office room. Plaster falls from the beams and the iron rods have become exposed and rusted. The building might collapse any time, causing heavy loss of lives.
Parvin, a Class V student, said a chunk of plaster fell on her head a month ago, adding that she has not attended classes regularly since then.
The present dilapidated building was built in 1994 and started developing cracks from 2010, Headmaster Shefali Rani Biswas said, adding that they cannot hold classes during the rainy season as rainwater seeps through the ceiling.
The headmaster said she has informed the authorities concerned about the matter, but to no effect.
Assistant teacher Asma Khatun said there are six teachers and 165 students from Class I to Class V. They become panicky when there is a storm as chunks of plaster fall from the ceiling.
Magura Sadar Upazila Education Officer Shah Alam said they have written to the authorities concerned and funds will be provided soon.
