Clash over control of fish landing station
At least four people were injured as two rival groups of Awami League (AL) clashed over control of fish landing station at Ulania under Mehendiganj upazila of the district on Sunday night.
Of the injured, bullet-hit Altaf Sardar alias Altu Sardar, 55, vice president of Ulania union unit of AL, was admitted to Barisal Sher- e- Bangla Medical College Hospital while the rest to the upazila health complex.
Police and locals said there had been a long-standing conflict between Jamal Molla, Ulania union parishad chairman and organising secretary of AL Mehendiganj upazila unit, and Altaf Hossain Sardar, Govindapur union AL vice president, over control of the area.
At around 11:35pm on Sunday, some people belonging to the rival groups locked in an altercation over control of Ulania fish landing station. At one stage, a scuffle broke out between the two groups and Altaf sustained bullets wounds during the fight.
As the news spread in the area, the supporters of Jamal and Altaf equipped with lethal weapons swooped on each other at Ulania Bazar, leaving at least four people from both sides injured.
Being informed, police went to the spot at around 12:20am and dispersed the clashing groups.
