‘Build militancy-free Bangladesh'
The country's youths should be united with the spirit of the Language Movement and the Liberation War to build a militancy-free non-communal Bangaldesh, speakers said.
They said this while attending the triennial council of the district unit of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League held at Thakurgaon Government Boys' High School premises in the town yesterday.
The council was held after 12 years of formation of the last district unit committee on September 25, 2005.
Chairman of Jubo League's central committee Omar Faroque Chowdhury inaugurated the council while Awami League (AL) Presidium Member Ramesh Chandra Sen attended the programme as chief guest.
Among others, district unit President of AL Dabirul Islam, also lawmaker from Thakurgaon-2 constituency, its general secretary Sadek Quraishi and lawmaker (reserved for women) Selina Jahan Lita, spoke.
A total of 208 councillors will cast their votes to elect new leadership for the next three years.
Party sources said incumbent General Secretary of the unit Abdul Mazid Apple and its organising secretary Gobinda Pal are vying for the post of president while former president of Sadar upazila unit of Jubo League Kamrul Islam and former BCL leader Samir Dutta are contesting for the general secretary post.
