Brahmanbaria road crash: Tank lorry workers observe strike
Workers of Brahmanbaria District Tank-Lorry Federation observed an eight-hour work abstention in Sadar and Ashuganj upazilas since this morning, protesting a road accident that killed three of their leaders.
The strike began around 6:00am in the two upazilas, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.
Meanwhile, the transport workers observed an hour long strike across the country from 10:00am protesting the same incident.
The federation called the strike yesterday after three of the federation’s leaders were killed by a stone-laden truck while trying to get away from highway police by a motorcycle in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria yesterday.
The organisation also demanded immediate action against Sub-Inspector of Sarail Highway Police Station Md Anisuzzaman as he allegedly threw a stick at the victims’ bikes that led to the accident, SM Aslam, joint secretary general of the federation, said.
The SI chased them after they refused to pay money to the highway policemen, the joint secretary general alleged.
If the government does not take any action against the lawman, they will call tougher movement, he added.
The accident took place while they tried to speed away, lost control and a stone-laden truck from behind ran over the motorcycle. The three died on the spot.
According to witnesses, highway policemen stopped the motorcycle on Dhaka-Sylhet highway and “demanded money” from the trio, saying more than two persons riding on a bike is prohibited.
MA Masud, assistant superintendent of police of Brahmanbaria, told our correspondent additional policemen were deployed at the key points of the two upazilas to avert any untoward incident.
