‘BNP may shun ties with Jamaat after national unity talks’
BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan today said the party will think about severing its ties with Jamaat-e-Islami, a component of the 20-party opposition alliance after the process of national unity to fight militancy starts.
“When discussion [with the government] will start on national unity, we will look into the matter,” Khan made the remark at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
When asked whether BNP will sever its ties with Jamaat to create national unity with the government, Khan in a counter question asked, “Why are you trying to make alternatives. What we are saying is -- we will look into the issue once discussion will start on the national unity.”
“Why don’t you [journalists] ask questions when government was formed with autocratic rulers and Rajakars?” Khan asked.
Khan also alleged that the government has been on an arrest spree of its leaders and activists across the country in the name of arresting the Gulshan café attackers.
The real offenders remain in the dark and are getting encouraged to carry out their activities and attacks as the government is blaming opposition for any incident and terror attack in the country, Khan said.
A day after the gruesome militant attack on a Gulshan café that killed 20 people, mostly foreigners, Khaleda at a press conference called upon all to form a national unity to rid the country from militancy.
The briefing was organised to talk about the BNP chief’s call.
Ruling Awami League rejected Khaleda’s appeal saying that BNP will have to sever its ties with Jamaat that opposed the country’s Liberation War and allegedly patronised different militant outfits.
