BCG vaccine, antibiotic can cause impotence

Netherlands professor tells Nilphamari seminar on leprosy

Researchers at a seminar here yesterday said immunological complications and side effects of some particular drugs taken by the patients suffering from leprosy can cause impotence.

Leprosy is a chronic infection disease caused by bacteria. The leprosy patients usually take BCG vaccine and Rifampicin antibiotic.

They said this at a seminar on leprosy at the Training Centre of The Leprosy Mission International, Bangladesh (TLMIB) in Nilphamari town.

Prof Dr Annemieke Geluk of Immune Diagnostics and Tuberculosis Department at Leiden University, the Netherlands, said consuming BCG vaccine and Rifampicine antibiotic can cause impotence in leprosy patients.

During the programme, researchers from home and abroad shared their experiences regarding their findings on different branches of their research work on leprosy patients.

They also focused on the safety of the affected person's relatives and using a variety of modern footwear to prevent spreading of leprosy ulcers.

Presided by TLMIB Country Director Solomon Sumon Haldar, Rangpur Divisional Director (health) Dr Mohammad Mozammel attended the seminar as the chief guest.

International researchers Prof Dr Annemieke Geluk and Prof Dr JH Richardus of Public Health and Infectious Diseases at Leiden University were present as key speakers.
