Bangladeshi arrested while swimming to Malaysia
Singapore police, Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old Bangladesh national who overstayed in Singapore while he was trying to swim to Malaysia.
On information that a man was seen swimming towards the water pipeline along the Causeway, ICA officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint made the arrest at about 11:20pm that day, the officials said in a statement today, according to Channel News Asia.
Police also found and arrested two other Bangladesh nationals, aged 34 and 37, acting as look-outs, the news portal reports.
According to Channel News Asia, if the man is convicted of overstaying or illegal entry, he faces up to six months’ jail and a minimum of three strokes of the cane.
Meanwhile if convicted of helping the 30-yr-old leave Singapore illegally, the two other men face between six months and two years’ jail, and a fine of up to $6,000.
