Bangladesh aid flight for Nepal victims suspended
Authorities cancelled today’s flight that was scheduled to depart Dhaka with aid for Nepal victims as the plane did not receive landing clearance at Tribhuban International Airport in Kathmandu.
The flight was scheduled to depart Hajrat Shahjalal International Airport around 11:00am and return with the Bangladeshis currently located at the affected Katmandu.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), media wing of the armed forces, said in a press release that the Bangladesh Air Force flight was cancelled sans clearance from the airport.
The airport could not give space to the flight since many international flights are waiting there, ISPR said. “So the authorities had to suspend the flight.”
If it gets clearance from the airport, the plane will fly to Kathmandu next time, it said.
The death toll in the deadly 7.8 earthquake in Nepal, that struck last Saturday, climbed to over 5,000. A series of aftershocks followed – the first one a strong 6.8.
Nepalese Prime Minister yesterday declared three days of national mourning for the 5,057 people who died in the country’s disaster. More than 100 people died in neighbouring countries such as India and China. Around 8,000 people had been injured while the United Nations estimated that eight million people had been affected.
