Bailey bridge collapses due to weight of stone-laden truck
Steel plates and a girder of a bailey bridge over Garamara canal in Bogra's Dhunat upazila have been broken under the heavy weight of a stone-laden truck yesterday, snapping road links between Bogra's Dhunat and Sherpur upazilas and Kazipur upazila in Sirajganj.
Witnesses said the girder and steel plates collapsed when the truck, en route to Sirajgonj from Nilphamari, was crossing it at around 9:30am.
The 62 metre-long bridge was constructed over the canal in 1992 by the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) Bogra. Since then, heavily loaded trucks have been crossing the bridge, and the authorities never stopped their movement, even though the bridge subsided slightly a year ago, a source said.
In the last few years, the plates on the bridge collapsed a few times, and temporary repair work was undertaken, but that was also fruitless, locals said.
Hafizur Rahman, upazila nirbahi officer of Dhunat, said they have asked the high officials of RHD to repair the bridge as soon as possible.
