A group trying to destroy apparel sector: Minister
State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu today came down hard on the agitating apparel workers and said a vested quarter is trying to destroy the sector.
His fume came in parallel to the ongoing strike of apparel workers in the industrial belt of Savar who are refusing to work unless their minimum wage is raised to Tk 15,000 per month.
“We yet to receive any written copy of their (workers) demands. If we get it then we can take initiative to resolve their issue,” Mujibul Haque said at a programme in The Daily Star Centre.
Meanwhile, today 25 garment factories were shut in face of workers’ strike, a Savar correspondent reports. They blocked Dhaka-Tangail highway this morning at Ashulia, on the outskirts area of the capital.
The authorities shut the factories fearing violence as the workers took to the street around 10:00am, an official of DK Group said. A factory of the group was shut today.
After half an hour, police fired teargas shells to disperse the workers.
Currently, the workers are getting a monthly salary of Tk 7,000 on average.
