Anti-militancy drive at Chittagong madrasa
Law enforcers today conducted an anti-militant drive at a madrasa run by a top Hefajat-e-Islami leader in Chittagong city.
The drive continued between 4:30pm and 6:00pm at Al Jamiatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa in Lalkhan Bazar area, said Sheikh Md Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station.
The madrasa is founded and run by Hefajat nayeb-e-ameer Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
Talking to reporters at a press briefing after the raid, Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Muttaki Ibnu Minan said they conducted the drive as a part of the countrywide drive against militancy.
“We had no specific information. But we have conducted the raid as a part of ongoing anti-militancy drive,” he said.
No firearms or explosives were found during the drive, he said.
Earlier, three people including two students were killed and several others injured in an explosion at four-storey dormitory of the madrasa on October 7, 2013.
Police found huge explosives including at least 30 handmade grenades stored at a room on the second floor of the dormitory.
Police later filed three cases under the explosives act, killing and for preserving acid against some 12 people including Mufti Izharul Islam and his son Harun Izhar.
