AL leader stabbed
A ward level Awami League (AL) leader came under attack yesterday allegedly by his rivals while he was distributing leaflets that inscribed the irregularities of a local madrasa in Kalapara upazila of the district.
Nur Sayeed Hawlader, general secretary of Ward no 7 unit AL, is now undergoing treatment at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) with stab injuries in his left hand and left leg.
Locals said Sayeed has been distributing leaflets that mentioned the irregularities of Akkelpur Senior Madrasa for the last couple of days.
A gang led by local goons Sohag and Kanon swooped on Sayeed and beat him mercilessly before stabbing him with sharp weapons in Hazipur area and fled the scene, locals alleged.
Hearing screams, villagers took him to Kalapara Upazila Health Complex from where he was referred to SBMCH.
Locals said the attackers are close aides to Ruhul Amin, AL leader and chairman of the madrasa managing committee.
“Ruhul's men Sohag and Kanon attacked me while I was distributing the leaflets yesterday,” injured Sayeed said.
Ruhul, however, denied his involvement in the attack.
