Now PSC exams to stay
The government today backtracked on a previous decision and kept the provision of primary terminal examinations for fifth grade students.
Cabinet division, in a regular meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, took the decision, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said in briefing.
Reasons cited in favour of keeping the provision were infrastructure problems of the education system and the accustomation of teachers teaching at the primary level.
By this decision, therefore, the primary school certificate (PSC) and madrasa equivalent ebtedai examinations, introduced in 2009, will take place this year.
Last week, Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman announced of abolishing the primary terminal examinations in face of demands from guardians and educationists.
He had spoken, “with certainty,” that the cabinet division would endorse the scrapping of class V terminal examinations and instead hold one public test after class VIII.
As customary, the dumping proposal was forwarded to the cabinet division which eventually led to the scrapping today.
