79 BCL men resign from BAU committee
Seventy nine leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) belonging to its Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) unit yesterday submitted their resignation, protesting what they said criminal activities by the organisation's BAU unit president and secretary on the campus.
Sixty seven of the resigning people are holders of different posts of BAU central committee including its vice-president, joint secretaries, organising secretaries and office secretary while 12 others belong to different hall committees, sources said.
"BCL's BAU central unit president Morsheduzzaman Khan Babu and secretary Saiful Islam have been doing anti-organisational activities, affecting its image on the campus," said Tayefur Rahman Riad, reading out a written statement at a press conference at TSC, on behalf of the 79 BCL men who resigned from their posts.
"The unit president and the secretary are involved with tender manipulation, extortion, ransacking, and other criminal activities to impose their dominance on the campus for long and it hampers the overall academic activities of the university," goes the statement.
"A 119-member BCL unit committee was formed in 2013. But six of them were expelled from the committee, seven including the secretary are in jail now, 10 are absconding as accused in different cases while 20 are non-students and employees," it adds.
The resigning activists also declared the BAU BCL president, its secretary and their followers unwanted on the campus.
They demanded formation of a new BCL committee at BAU soon.
Later, they submitted their resignation letters to BCL office secretary Atik Shahier around 3:00pm.
“I received the resignation letters to send them to BCL central committee for next course of action,” Atik Shahier said.
The resigning BCL men also urged the BAU authorities to take steps against the so-called student leaders to maintain congenial atmosphere on the campus.
BAU BCL president Morsheduzzaman Khan Babu could not be contacted despite repeated attempts as his mobile remained off.
