7 killed as storms lash 5 districts
Nor'wester and thunderstorm lashed through Chapainawabganj, Pabna, Jessore, Barguna and Sylhet districts in last two days, leaving seven more people, including two women, dead and around 100 others injured.
Accompanied by rain, the storms also damaged several hundred houses and uprooted trees and electric poles in the five districts.
Earlier, at least seven people, including a child, were killed in Dinajpur, Rangpur, Sylhet, Magura and Jessore on Friday.
Most of the victims died in lightning strike during storms on Friday night and early yesterday, our correspondents report.
In Chapainawabganj, a 37-year-old housewife was killed is Shibganj upazila when a streak of thunderbolt hit her when she went out of her room amid rain early yesterday to cover the firewood piled in the courtyard.
The deceased, Sakhina Begum, was wife of Saidul Islam of Koilar Diar village in the upazila.
Local Union Parishad Chairman Khairul Islam said Sakhina died on the spot when a thunderbolt struck her around 3:00am.
Our Pabna correspondent reported that police yesterday recovered the bodies of three victims killed in lightning strikes during a storm that lashed different areas of the district on Friday evening.
The deceased, Dulal Hossain, 40, Abdul Alim, 32, and Laim Uddin, 50, were residents of Bikramaditya village in Sujanagar upazila, police said.
At least 50 people were injured and a number of houses damaged in Sujanagar and Chatmohar upazilas of the district.
Of them, 41 people, including 16 critically injured, were admitted to Chatmohar Upazila Health Complex, hospital sources said.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sujanagar Police Station Mohammad Obayed said thunderbolt struck the three while they were working in an onion field in the evening.
Family members and villagers spotted their bodies lying in the field on Saturday morning and informed the police, the OC said.
In Jessore, a college girl died from electrocution in Abhoynagar upazila when a snapped live electric wire fell on her during a storm on Friday night, reports our Benapole correspondent.
The victim, Laizu Khatun, 19, was daughter of Mustahar Ali of Prembag village in the upazila.
Two other victims, Oishee Khatun and Fatema Khatun, also sustained injuries in the incident while they were going to a nearby shop.
OC Sheikh Gani Mia of Abhaynagar Police Station said Oishee was admitted to Jessore General Hospital while Fatema is undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Away in Barguna, a 28-year-old youth was killed in lightning strike while he was going to a nearby bazar in Taltoli upazila yesterday.
The victim, Mohammad Sajal, was son of Sultan Hawlader of Moranidra village in the upazila, OC of Taltoli Police Station Pulok Chandra Roy said.
Meanwhile, a Jubo League leader, who sustained critical injuries during a storm in Sylhet's Dakkhin Surma upazila on Thursday, died at a hospital in the capital yesterday.
The deceased was Mosaddek Hossain Musa, joint-convenor of the upazila unit Jubo League.
