6 jailed for stone extraction
A mobile court yesterday sentenced six people to two months' imprisonment each for extracting stones illegally from the Dahuk river in Tentulia upazila of Panchagarh.
The convicts are former chairman of Buraburi Union Parishad Kamruzzaman Kamu, Ziaur Rahman, son of Akbar Ali and Alam Hossain, son of Khalilur Rahman of Buraburi village, Saiful Islam, son of Sirajul Islam of Titihipara village, Shahiduzzaman, son of Toibur Rahman of Hawajoth village and Rubel Islam, son of Belal Hossain of Rawshanpur village in the upazila.
Locals said a group of people, including the former chairman, have been extracting stones with dredgers (locally known as boma machine) after barricading the flow of the Dahuk river at Rawshanpur village, ignoring the ban imposed by the local administration.
On information, a task force comprising police and Border Guard Bangladesh members led by the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) conducted a drive at the place and arrested them, while some others managed to flee.
Soon after the arrest, a mobile court led by the UNO, also executive magistrate, Saniul Ferdous handed down the verdict.
