5 Moulvibazar ‘war criminals’ indicted
A tribunal in Dhaka today framed five charges against five Moulvibazar persons for allegedly committing crimes during the Liberation War in 1971.
The three-member panel of International Crimes Tribunal-1 led by Justice Anwarul Haque fixed January 15 next year for beginning the trial with the opening statement of the prosecution, prosecutor Sultan Mahmud Simon told The Daily Star.
Among the accused, Yunus Ahmed, 71, of Sonatiki and Ujer Ahmed Chowdhury, 63, of Goashpur village in Rajnagar upazila of Moulvibazar are now in jail, while Samsul Hossain Tarafder, 65, of Bagajura who was an alleged commander of Al-Badr, Nesar Ali, 75, of Jamura, and Mobarak Mia, 66, of the same upazila, are on the run.
Samsul was an alleged commander of Al-Badr while the other accused were allegedly involved in the Razakar Bahini.
Starting on October 12, 2014, the tribunal's investigation agency completed the probe against them on January 20.
The charges against them are: Killing of Danu Mia, looting and torching of three houses and confinement of three people and abduction, confinement and torture of three people and looting and torching of the houses of one Harendra Bhattacharya between November 22 and December 5; killing of one Jamini Mohan Dev and abduction, confinement and torture of three people on November 25; abduction of four people including one Rasraj Bhattacharya on November 27; abduction and torture of four people and killing of two between November 29 and December 8; and killing of 14 people including one Shushital Dhar on December 29.
