17 killed in Tangail, Sylhet, Jhalakathi road crashes
Seventeen people were killed and 73 injured in separate road accidents in Tangail, Sylhet and Jhalakathi today.
Of them, eleven people were killed in three road crashes in Madhupur, Mirzapur and Kalihati upazilas of Tangail while four in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet and two in Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi.
Tangail
Four people were killed and 25 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck at Madhupur upazila in Tangail this evening.
The accident took place at Ashura area on Tangail-Mymensingh road around 6:30pm when a Mymensingh-bound bus collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction, leaving four people dead on the spot and 25 other injured, our correspondent reports quoting police sources.
One of the deceased was identified as Liton Miah, 30, of Poddarbari village in Madhupur upazila. Identities of the others are yet to be known.
Being informed, police and Fire Service and Civil Defense personnel rescued the injured people and rushed them to Madhupur Upazila Health Complex, police sources also said.
Several critically injured people were later sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, they added.
Earlier, a bus collided head-on with a truck on Dhaka-Tangail highway at Ichail in Mirzapur upazila around 7:15am, leaving five people including two women and two children dead and 32 injured.
One of the deceased was identified as Salma Akter, 25, our Tangail correspondent reports adding that all the dead and injured victims were passengers of the bus.
Mohammad Main Uddin, officer-in-charge of Mirzapur Police Station, told The Daily Star that some garments workers were returning to their work places at Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, from Kurigram by the passenger bus after celebrating Eid-ul-Azha.
The bus collided with the truck after one of its tyres deflated at Ichail around 7:15am, leaving a woman and a child dead on the spot, the OC said.
Informed, police and Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel rescued the injured and rushed them to the Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital.
One of the injured died on the way to the hospital while two others succumbed after they were admitted to the hospital, he added.
All the injured passengers were receiving treatment at the hospital whilst two are in critical condition, said Dr Dulal Chandra Poddar, director of the hospital.
Vehicular movement on Dhaka-Tangail highway remained suspended following the road crash, creating heavy jam. The transport movement became normal after the law enforcers removed the damaged bus and truck from the highway, sources said.
Mahbub Hossan, deputy commissioner in Tangail, visited the spot and announced to give Tk 20,000 to each of the deceased’ family and Tk 10,000 to each of the injured person, Masum Ahmed, upazila nirbahi officer in Mirzapur told the correspondent.
In another incident, two motorcycle riders were killed as a private car rammed into a motorbike carrying the duo in Analiabari area of Kalihati upazila around 9:30am, said the OC of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station.
One of the deceased was identified as Mohammad Touhid, son of Belal Hossain of Bamondanga village in Gaibandha Sadar upazila.
They were heading towards Dhaka after enjoying their holidays back in their ancestral home in Gaibandha, the OC added.
Doctors declared Touhid dead after he was whisked off to Tangail Medical College and Hospital.
Police seized the private car but its driver managed to flee, Asabur said.
Sylhet
Four people, including two children, were killed and 15 injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch at Kayasthagram on the Sylhet-Jakiganj road in Golapganj upazila around 10:30am.
The children are identified as Shuva, 10, and her sister Tanima, 6, daughters of Koyes Miah of Goashpur village in Golapganj, our Sylhet correspondent reports.
Officer-in-charge (investigation) of Golapganj Police Station Mir Abdul Naser said the Sylhet-bound bus, coming from Jakiganj, fell into a roadside ditch, leaving 19 passengers injured.
The injured were taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where four people succumbed to their injuries, the OC added.
Jhalakathi
Two people were killed while one was severely injured in a road accident on Barisal-Khulna highway at Pingri of Rajapur upazila this afternoon, our correspondent reports quoting Sheikh Munirul Giash, officer-in-charge of Rajapur Police Station.
The incident took place when a Barisal-bound motorcycle with three passengers was hit by a bus coming from the opposite direction, witnesses said.
Two of the three motorcycle riders died on the spot, while the third was severely injured and was taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in critical condition, the OC said.
The deceased were identified as Shajib, 18, son of Selim of Algi area in Rajapur upazila and Khalilur Rahman, 33, son of Ruhul Amin of Tafalbari area in Patuakhali Sadar upazila, the OC added.
