1 killed, 30 ‘missing’ in Madaripur trawler capsize
A woman was killed and at least 30 others including children went missing as a trawler capsized in the Kumar river in Madaripur this evening.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
The trawler, carrying more than one hundred people, capsized around 7:30pm when it collided head-on with a vessel in Ukil Bari area, reports a correspondent quoting witnesses.
The people of Kalagachi village under Tendua union were celebrating the holy Janmashtami boarding on the trawler, said Pranatosh Mondol, convener of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad’s Madaripur unit.
Among the passengers, many of them could manage to swim ashore while some received injuries in the incident, he said.
Four injured were admitted to Madaripir Sadar Hospital for treatment.
Police along with Madaripur Fire Service and Civil Defence members were deployed to rescue operation, he added.
