3 under-trial prisoners get HC bail after 16yrs
Three under-trial prisoners, who have been serving in jail for over 16 years, secured bail from the High Court today in separate murder cases.
The HC also ordered the lower court concerned to conclude trial proceedings of the cases filed against Makbul Hossain, Sentu Kamal and Billal Hossain in 90 days.
However, it refused to grant bail to another prisoner Chan Mia as he had given confessional statements before police and a magistrate in connection with the murder case filed against him. The lower court which has been running the trial proceedings against Chan Mia was asked to finish the trial in 60 days.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and JBM Hassan passed the order after hearing the statements of the four under-trial prisoners and examining their case documents.
Earlier in the day, the authorities of Kashimpur jail produced the prisoners before the HC bench as per its suo moto order delivered on November 20.
Of them, Chan Mia has reportedly been serving in prison for 18 years, Billal for 17 years and Mokbul and Sentu for 16 years in connection with the murder cases.
According to the report, Chan Miah has been in Kashimpur jail since 1999 in a case, which is pending with Paribesh Appeal Adalot (Environment Appellate Court) in Dhaka. Makbul Hossain from Madaripur was arrested in 2000 in a murder case, which is pending with a Dhaka court.
