‘210 accidents, 265 killed during Eid’
At least 265 people were killed on roadways, waterways and railways in Bangladesh while making journey for the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, claims a passenger welfare body.
- 193 killed in road crashes
- 210 accidents in 12 days
Total 210 incidents of accidents took place during September 7 to September 18, said Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, at a press briefing today.
A total of 193 people were killed and 1056 were injured in separate road crashes during this period, he said citing a report they prepared based on media reports.
Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest religious festival of the Muslims held on September 13, saw a huge number of people leaving cities for their village homes and holiday destinations.
A three-day holiday declared for Eid was extended by declaring last week’s Sunday a holiday. People, however, started leaving cities much earlier to maximise the holiday.
Coming back from Eid, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader was shocked at the “procession of death” on highways and shouldered its responsibility.
As recommendation, Golam Rahman, former chairman for Anti-Corruption Commission, on behalf of the passengers’ welfare association, suggested people to “move cautiously” on roads.
