150 shops gutted in Barguna town, 15 injured
Over 150 shops were gutted in a fire at Municipality Super Market in Barguna town on Monday night.
The fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop at around 10:30pm and soon engulfed the entire market, fire service sources said, adding that goods worth about Tk five crore were destroyed.
Three fire fighting units, with the help of locals, brought the blaze under control after four hours of frantic efforts.
Monoranjon Sarker, deputy assistant director Barguna Fire Service, said, "On information, we rushed to the spot and started extinguishing the fire. Later, another unit from nearby Amtali upazila headquarters joined the operation."
At least 15 people, including Abul Kasem, a fireman of Barguna Fire Station, were injured. They received primary treatment at local clinics, he added.
Barguna district administration formed a five-member probe body headed by Md Abdullah, additional deputy commissioner, to find out the cause of the fire, assess the damage, and prepare a list of the affected shop owners.
Other members of the body are Md Ibrahim, assistant commissioner for land, Sajedul Islam, assistant commissioner, Abu Bakar Siddik, district relief and rehabilitation officer, and Monoranjon Sarker.
Contacted, Mir Jahirul Islam, deputy commissioner (DC) of Barguna, said the district administration will provide possible financial assistance for the victims after getting the probe report and list of the victims.
