10 injured as rival AL men clash in Sunamganj
At least 10 activists were injured in a clash between two factions of the ruling Awami League at Rajapur bazaar in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district yesterday morning.
The injured were admitted to Chhatak Upazila Health Complex and Sunamganj Sadar Hospital.
Locals said there had been a longstanding dispute between local lawmaker Mohibur Rahman Manik and Chhatak Municipality Mayor Kalam Chowdhury over establishing supremacy in the area.
The rival groups arranged a rally at the same place and time in Rajapur Bazar area yesterday.
At around 11:00am, the supporters of lawmaker Mohibur Rahman, and Mayor Kalam Chowdhury locked in altercation over holding the rally. At one stage, they swooped on each other, leaving at least 10 people from both sides injured
Witnesses said the two rival groups used lethal weapons during the clash that continued for half an hour. On information, police rushed to the spot, fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to disperse the clashing groups.
The clash halted traffic for half an hour on Gobindaganj road.
Contacted, Police Superintendent Harun-ur-Rashid said law enforcers brought the situation under control. Additional police have been in the bazaar area to avert any further clash, he added.
