'Corrupt' Biman boss enjoying 'impunity' for Hasina
Though the staff repeatedly accused him of committing corruption, Biman Chairman Jamal Uddin was not removed since he is close to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, BNP leader Rizvi Ahmed said yesterday.
"Jamal Uddin was one of the key masterminds of the MiG29 scam. To reward this corrupt man, Hasina appointed him Biman's chairman," he told a press conference at party headquarters in the capital.
On Wednesday, detectives arrested five persons including three high officials of Biman Bangladesh Airlines in a major operation to track a gold smuggling ring. The detectives said they had found involvement of more than 60 officials and staff of Biman, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (Caab), and customs with a gold smuggling racket at the Shahjalal International Airport.
Biman staff--from captain to cabin crew--and Caab security officials have links with the syndicate, according to detectives, customs intelligence and Armed Police Battalion. At least 12 other rackets are also active in smuggling gold through the country's premier airport, they said.
Meanwhile, one of the arrestees, Mahmudul Haque Palash, the alleged key player in the smuggling ring, used to tell everyone that he was the chairman's godson.
