Cop loses fight for life
After battling for life for 19 days, police constable Shamim Mia died of his wounds at a city hospital yesterday.
The 28-year-old suffered injuries to his head while trying to escape a petrol bomb attack on a police bus near the Matsya Bhaban in the capital on January 17.
The attack left at least 13 cops injured.
Shamim had been on life support at the neurosurgery department of Square Hospital. He passed away at 9:30am, said hospital sources.
His death is the first in the police department since the BNP-led 20-party alliance enforced an indefinite blockade on January 6. Violence sprung up in the country ever since.
Police sources said Shamim had jumped out of the bus to escape
FAMILY RUINED
Shamim was the only breadwinner in his seven-member family. A resident of Gaibandha, his wife Bilkis Akter is four months pregnant.
Her brother Saiful Islam, also a constable, said: “Shamim was overjoyed at becoming a father for the first time. He even chose a name for the unborn child.”
The victim had served Naogaon police for around eight years before joining the Dhaka Metropolitan Police at the Rajarbagh Police Lines in last December.
He was the third of four brothers. His eldest brother, a former soldier of the erstwhile Bangladesh Rifles, lost his job after the 2009 mutiny in the force. The second of the brothers is mentally challenged while the youngest is an HSC student.
An autopsy was carried out on the body of Shamim at the Dhaka Medical College morgue yesterday.
Police were to hand over the body to the victim's family members last night.
