Cop firing kills 2 BNP men in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj
Two BNP men were killed in police firing during separate clashes in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi and Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj today.
In protest, the party called dawn-to-dusk hartals in both the districts for tomorrow.
In Rajshahi, a local BNP leader was killed in police firing during a clash involving the opposition and ruling party activists as well as law enforcers in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi this afternoon.
At least 20 other people including eight policemen were injured in the clash that continued for around two hours from 3:00pm at Baneshwar Bazar, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.
Charghat upazila chairman Abu Syeed Chowdhury and a photojournalist were among the injured.
The deceased was identified as Majir Uddin, 45, vice-president of a ward at Charghat Union.
Talking to The Daily Star, Alamgir Kabir, superintendent of police in Rajshahi, said the lawmen had to fire shots in self-defence as the agitators went violent.
The clash ensued as police barred them from holding a rally there as part of the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s countrywide programme to observe “democracy killing day”.
In Chapainawabganj, BNP activist Jamsed was hit by a bullet during the clash with police and succumbed to his injuries on way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
At least 10 people including two lawmen were injured in the clash between police and BNP-Jamaat activists at Kansat intersection of Shibganj upazila around 3:00pm.
The clash ensued as BNP-Jamaat men were trying to bring out a procession defying Section 144 imposed by the local administration, witnesses and police said.
Moinul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shibganj Police Station, said some BNP men hurled crude bombs and brick chips at the law enforcers who responded with firing several rounds of bullets.
Ten people including a member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were injured during the hour long chased and counter chase, reports our Chapainawabganj correspondent.
The protesters blasted several crude bombs during the scuffle, said police.
Later, additional police and Rab men went to the area and brought the situation under control.
