Clinker-laden cargo vessel capsizes in Meghna
A cargo vessel carrying 1,300 tonnes of cement clinker capsized in Meghna river in Chandpur after an oil tanker hit it this morning.
MV Chitolmari sank in the river near Puranbazar as cracks developed in its bottom after being hit by MV Hekmat around 7:00am, our Chandpur correspondent reports quoting master of the sunken vessel Aminul Islam.
All the 12 crew of MV Chitolmari either were either rescued by divers or swam ashore.
The ill-fated cargo was going to Ghorashal via Chandpur from Chittagong, the master said.
On information, a team of Chandpur river police rushed to the spot and seized MV Hekmat, said Zahidul islam, in-charge of the river police outpost.
Monirul Islam, a fire service official, said the point where the cargo has sunken is 150 feet deep. The divers were yet to start their search operation due to the strong current, he said in the afternoon.
MV Dinar and MV Nasrin capsized at the same point with hundreds of passengers in the past and those could not be traced, said Mobarak Hossain, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
