Zika still a threat: Nasim
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim yesterday told parliament that the Zika virus continues to threaten Bangladesh although it did not exist here.
“...the virus has already spread in various neighbouring countries and there is presence of Aedes mosquitoes in the country,” he reasoned while responding to a starred question from Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Rezaul Karim Tansen.
He said some 88 countries detected the presence of Zika virus while all Asian countries were under its threat.
Responding to another question from ruling party MP Mizanur Rahman, he said Zika virus has been detected in 19 Bangladeshis living in Singapore. “They are working in their respective organisations after taking treatment,” he said.
Nasim said the government has taken special measurers in all ports giving access through land, sea and air to prevent entry of Zika virus.
Replying to a question from a treasury bench lawmaker, Nasim said 4,143 people tested HIV positive in the country and of them, 658 have passed away.
Moreover, two bills, “Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council Bill, 2016” and “Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development Bill, 2016”, were placed.
